Yesterday the Chief Justice - accompanied by four gentlemen came to the Government Offices to complain to me, in language held publicly by you on a former occasion, of one held by you derogatory to his character and requesting that I would institute an enquiry as to what had taken place and obtain becoming reparation.

Not being willing to trust to my recollection of the conversation that occurred I requested His Honor to convey to me in writing the tenor of his communication and I received a letter of which the following is a copy.

There follows a copy of the letter from the Chief Justice dated 20 May 1856. Of the five gentlemen referred to by the Chief Justice three are public functionaries & I thought it my duty to call upon them for a written statement as to the facts which had been the subject of His Honor's representation. I did not think it desirable that I should trouble either Mr. Heath Stewart or Mr. Leslie.

Captain King replies that at the Artillery dinner on the 14th instant you stated publicly at the table, that the Chief Justice was drunk at Government House the night before and that he considered the cloth as disgraced or words to that effect.
